Technical Skill and Emotion

Hi, friends.

Playing the Low D whistle isn’t just about nailing the music the way it’s written and throwing in a few ornaments. It’s about sensing the music; its rhythm, its emotion, combined with the music, and using the instrument to express it.

Our learning involves experimenting with ways to express the music as much as hit the right notes. Mary Bergin says our playing should connect with the soul.

In this video we look at how to use The Dunmore Lasses as a way to practice our technical skills as well as our emotive skills.

I hope this encourages you to jump in play tunes in different ways. We need to wrap our minds and fingers around the tune. We need to wrap our heart and soul around the expression.
