Learning to Play Faster
Hi, friends.
In this video I share my favorite ways to improve the speed at which I play.
I am certain these exercises will help us, but we need to consistently do them if we want to play faster.
With each recommendation I suggest we begin playing either scales, or specific runs (watch the video for these recommendations). Play these at a speed with which you are comfortable, and then play them again a little faster. Continue doing this until you find you cannot play the exercise that fast. At this point you have found the fastest speed at which you can play the exercise. Play it at this speed a few times. Do the same each day.
Exercises are great, but they only attempt to mirror the jumps and runs we find in tunes.
Follow this same recommendation with tunes you know that are supposed to be played quickly.
Consistent practice is the key. We will be frustrated if our expectation is that we will learn to play appreciably faster today. Practice today bears fruit next week, next month, and so on, as we continue our discipline of practicing each day.
