Irish Tune Types: Reel

Hi, friends.

In today’s video we look at Reels. As we learn to play our whistles it is good for us to have at least a basic understanding of the various tune types we will play in Irish music.

If we understand the basics of a type of tune, like a reel, then we are more likely able to play it better.

A reel is a dance tune. It may be played a little slower when folks are dancing, but it is definitely played full of energy. Reels are exciting tunes, and fun to play.

However, they are daunting to learn for us as beginners. Please be patient with yourself as you learn to play reels. As I say, play as you can and not as you can’t. Play the reel as slowly as you need to in order to play it well. After some practice you will become more proficient, which means you can play it faster.

Reels are generally in 4/4 time. You can count to four to the rhythm. This helps drive the rhythm forward. In the video I also introduce the list of reels that the folks at The Session provide.
